Indications/Uses
External genital & perianal warts (condylomata acuminata). Superficial basal cell carcinoma. Actinic keratosis.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Apply before going to bed. Genital warts Apply a thin layer onto clean, dry wart area & rub gently until cream vanishes. Leave on the wart for 6-10 hr, then wash off w/ mild soap & water. Apply 3 times per wk. Basal cell carcinoma Apply to the affected area & 1 cm around the affected area, & rub gently until cream vanishes. Leave on the skin for about 8 hr, then wash off w/ mild soap & water. Apply for 5 consecutive days each wk for 6 wk. Actinic keratosis Apply to the affected area & rub gently until cream vanishes. Leave on the skin for about 8 hr, then wash off w/ mild soap & water. Apply 3 times per wk. Further 4 wk of treatment may be necessary if not all lesions disappeared.
Contraindications
Special Precautions
Previous use of Aldara cream or other similar prep. Patients w/ immune system problems (eg, HIV patients) &/or abnormal blood count. May worsen existing inflammation in the treatment area. Do not apply internally (urethral, vag, cervical, rectal or intra-anal). Do not use until area to be treated has healed after previous drug or surgical treatment. Avoid contact w/ eyes, lips & nostrils; rinse w/ water in case of accidental contact. Wash the cream off w/ mild soap & water if the treated site becomes too uncomfortable. Do not cover the treated area w/ bandages or other dressings. Contains methyl hydroxybenzoate, propyl hydroxybenzoate, cetyl alcohol, stearyl alcohol & benzyl alcohol. Pregnancy. Do not breastfeed during treatment. Not recommended in childn & adolescents. Genital warts: Do not start using until after open sores have healed. Apply cream after sexual activity. May weaken condoms & diaphragms. Basal cell carcinoma or actinic keratosis: Do not use sunlamps or tanning beds, & avoid sunlight during treatment.
Adverse Reactions
For genital warts: Redness, wearing away of skin, flakiness & swelling, hardening under the skin, small open sores, crust that forms during healing, blisters, itching, burning sensation or pain in the treated area; headache. For basal cell carcinoma: Slight itching; paresthesia, small swollen areas in the skin, pain, burning, irritation, bleeding, redness or rash, swollen glands & back pain. For actinic keratosis: Slight itching; pain, burning, irritation or redness, headache, anorexia, nausea, muscle pain, joint pain & tiredness.
